  • Initially, the city of Volos had been selected to host the Games. However, on 28 January 2011 the ICMG withdrew the organisation of the Mediterranean Games from the Greek city which, severely affected by the global financial crisis, could not cope with the preparation of the event. On 25 February 2011, the Turkish city of Mersin was designated to replace Volos. The Games took place between 20 and 30 June and athletics were held in a 25,000-seat stadium, inaugurated just for the occasion. Twenty-four countries competed in the events with 3,064 athletes, including 1,070 women. Once again Italy dominated the team ranking with 186 podiums, way ahead of the host country, Turkey, which had to settle for 126 medals. Three countries, Andorra, Libya and Monaco did not make it to the podium. In swimming, the Tunisian Olympic champion Oussama Mellouli continued his medal streak. He won another five medals, bringing his Mediterranean total to 14, including 10 titles.
