  • Spain organised the Mediterranean Games for the second time after Barcelona, exactly fifty years earlier. To prepare for this event, Spain organised on 19 July 2003 the Junior Mediterranean Cup. Limited only to athletics, the teams from France, Spain, Algeria and Tunisia were gathered. The Games took place from June 24 to July 3 with the participation of 21 nations and 3,203 athletes, including 1,077 women. Italy and France finished at the top of the countries’ overall ranking with 153 podiums each, however Italy was ahead of France in gold medals (57 against 156). Spain was not far behind with 152 podiums, finishing third in the countries’ ranking. Only Monaco and Lebanon did not feature in the medal ranking.
