  • The XX Mediterranean Games held from 21 August to 3 September 2026 in Taranto, Italy. A total of 273 finals were contested, with 25 of the 26 participating nations taking to the podium at least once. 1,943 medals were awarded, comprising 618 gold, 618 silver and 707 bronze. The only nation not to do so was Malta. Andorra won its first-ever medal in the history of the Mediterranean Games, thanks to Naiara Linan Pardo in taekwondo.

    Among the historic achievements, on 1 September Greece won six golds in six rowing events. Turkey reached the 1,000-medal mark in its history at the Mediterranean Games. France surpassed the 1,900 mark, Spain the 1,400 mark, whilst Algeria and Morocco both reached 300 medals.

    Italy has rewritten the record books. The Italian delegation won 224 medals, beating the previous record of 193 set in Bari 1997. It became the first country to win more than 200 medals in a single edition, surpassing the 2,500-medal mark thanks to a hat-trick in the women’s road cycling race on 24 August. This was a clean sweep of the podium that Italy had not achieved since 1991, when it did so in the men’s singles tennis. Furthermore, it topped the medal table in 12 sports. In swimming, it won 51 of the 105 medals up for grabs, or 48.5 per cent.
